With cheaper flights available, package holidays available and on line booking; foreign travel is popular whichever country you live in. The thing you have to consider is what is in your immediate vicinity? Many people see a holiday as having to be a long way from home and in a better climate. There are those who also want culture and history as part or even all of the experience, again what is available nearer to home. As I am UK based my expertise is in this area but this could apply to most if not all people around the world. Even if you limit yourself to a few hundred miles maximum you can often have all you want from your trip.
Although there are famous sites and locations to visit around the world, think for a moment if you have visited those in your country or in nearby ones. Have those in France visited the historic war sites in France, have those in Britain who fly for skiing considered Scotland, have the Japanese who travel round the world for history considered their own country .It may be the case that you want to see something specific that you have to travel for but otherwise stick to what you can reach more easily. Obviously if you live in the centre of the USA and want a beach it might be harder but the theory applies otherwise.
Referring to my UK expertise there is skiing, history, mountains, stunning beaches and all needed for a basic holiday. The considerations for staying closer to home could be financial, saving your carbon effect or simply to see what you may have missed before. With the worlds fuel costs soaring now may be the time to stay closer to home and to use public transport other then aircraft; trains and coaches will reach most places and then use local transport when needed. Accommodation can be very reasonable when using youth hostels or even tents, most areas in the south can have a reasonable climate out of the main seasons and if you aren't interested in beaches then perhaps the climate isn't so important. Also if you were to join a charity like national trust or English heritage all their sites of history and interest are usually free after the initial join fees.
While this last piece is specific to the UK many parts can apply in many other places besides. For example youth hostels are worldwide; camping can be global as is public transport. For whatever reasons you may have try staying closer to home next time, you may find things you didn't know where there and may find a few nice surprises
